Plumbing Myths

[vc_row top_padding=”30″ bg_position=”left top”][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner animation=”none”][vc_column_text]We can’t be exactly sure how these plumbing myths became so popular. But they have held the test of time as we still hear about them often. Below are some common misconceptions about your home plumbing.

• Use Lemons and Ice to clean and to sharpen (respectively) your garbage disposal. We do agree that if you put lemon rinds in your disposal they will make it smell fresher for a time. However, with any fruit that high in citric acid, it will begin to corrode the metal surfaces of your disposal. Also, do not put ice in your disposal to sharpen the blades. Disposals do not have blades. They have impellers that are not sharp. So putting ice in there for the purpose of making the blades sharper will not work.

• Chemical drain cleaners work great for getting rid of clogs. These chemicals may work well in getting rid of your clog but they will also eat away at your pipes. In the same way that when you take antibiotics it kills the bad bacteria it also kills all the good bacteria in our bodies. Using these cleaners can also damage anything that they touch- such as your counters, your floors and skin so please use caution if you decide to utilize these cleaners.

• DIY is the best way to deal with plumbing issues. There are a lot of plumbing issues that can be taken care of by yourself. However, that is not always the case. If you are feeling uncomfortable with a small task or need to help with a larger issue please call one of our licensed plumbers. We are here to help with any issues that come up with your home plumbing.

• I’ve got a garbage disposal so I can put any of my trash down the disposal. This is a true statement, but not without consequences. If you chose to put large items, stringy foods, animal by-products, grease or oil down your disposal you will most likely find yourself with either a clogged drain or a locked disposal. The garbage disposal just wasn’t made for all your trash to go it.
