How to Fix a Running Toilet - NIR Plumbing

How to Fix a Running Toilet

[vc_row top_padding=”30″ bg_position=”left top”][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner animation=”none”][vc_column_text]When you have a running toilet it may seem like this is just a minor annoyance but it far more than that. A running toilet wastes precious water and money from your wallet. Both are literally being drained away.

One of the best tips we can offer up front is to familiarize yourself with how your toilet works. You can flush it a few times with the lid off and see how the different mechanisms works. If your toilet is running this is your first step to diagnose your problem. With a quick glance at your refilling toilet tank you can see any broken or clogged parts or any other issues.

If your tank is not refilling make sure to check the flapper. If the flapper is not creating a seal that would cause a toilet to run. If the flapper is old and stiff it may need to be replaced. Another piece that affects the flapper is the guide rod and chain. It may be that the rod is bent or the chain has gotten twisted. In this case, it is an easy fix to bend the rod back into proper shape and to untwist the chain.

Another common issue can be with the float. The float is used to indicate the level of water in the tank and to tell the water when to stop. If the float gets punctured or damaged then the float may be submerged and will not indicate the proper amount of water to flow into the tank. This is a simple fix of unscrewing the old float and replacing it with a new undamaged float.

These are just a few options as to why your toilet may be running. If you have checked these initially easy fixes and are still not able to diagnose your issue please give us a call at NIR Plumbing. We want to help ensure that you are not having an annoying toilet and save you money as you keep your water bills down.
