Why Does My Drain Get Clogged? - NIR Plumbing

Why Does My Drain Get Clogged?

[vc_row top_padding=”30″ bg_position=”left top”][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner animation=”none”][vc_column_text]A drain clogging up has to be one of the most annoying problems. What goes down that drain is supposed to stay down, right? But instead, what has gone down and now come back up and with a vengeance. If you are dealing with a clogged drain please take precaution and make sure that you are wearing gloves if you come in contact with the drain water. Also, please thoroughly wash yourself and your clothes with disinfectant soap. We don’t want to spread any unintentional disease or infections here.
One of the best ways to prevent a clogging drain is to know why it is clogging. Here are a few things that can cause a drain backup

1. Tree roots. Tree roots are a tree’s life blood. These roots not only provide support but they also find sources of water and oxygen to help the tree grow. These hair like roots will find the cracks or joints in your drainage pipes to enter into. These roots can cause some serious back ups. If left untreated they can even crack the pipes. The best preventative action here is to clear away the roots near your drains.

2. Solid Material. As obvious as this sounds this really is the main cause of drain clogs. From hair, sanitary napkins, paper towels, grease, diapers… these are usually the main culprits. Please be aware and careful of what you are putting down your drain. But even if there are some accidents (we all know that happens) another good measure is to put a fine mesh over your drains. This prevents any large items from making it very far.

3. Structural Damage. Over time there are always small shifts or changes to our landscapes that may lead to damage of pipes, cracks, holes or offset joints. It is always good to be checking your old drains and replacing them with new ones.

We hope that with these preventative measures that you will be able to avoid many of the issues that lead to a clogged drain. But if you should find water and debris coming back up that drain to haunt you – you know who to call. Not the ghostbusters – they don’t really exist. Call NIR Plumbing for all your plumbing needs.
