3 Reasons Your Garbage Disposal Fails
Sometimes we don’t appreciate what we have until they go away. This can be particularly true when someone is talking about their garbage disposal. You don’t even really know how much it helps you until it stops working. And of course, it always seems to happen at the most inconvenient times. If you’ve ever thought about why this happens, here are three reasons why your garbage disposal fails
Clog
One issue that might arise is a clog. You can usually tell this is happening because there is water backing up into your sink. If you turn on your disposal and it does nothing to dispense this water, you have another issue. Clogs can come from a variety of items including food, scale, grease, and sediment. Also, in the less than ideal category, clogs tend to smell over time. To clear a clog, you will need to plunge your sink with a cup plunger. If that does not work, you may need to snake the drain to clear out the offending clog.
Blocked
If you turn on your garbage disposal, and it hums, but the blades don’t rotate, it is possible that your garbage disposal is blocked. If this is the case, please do not investigate by putting your hands down the disposal. You could get dramatically injured. Please always ensure that you unplug your garbage disposal BEFORE examining. Once it is unplugged, you will want to use the Allen wrench that came with your disposal and turn it clockwise to dislodge whatever was stuck in the flywheel.
Power Issues
Finally, if your garbage disposal is not turning on then, that would be a significant problem. Confirm that your disposal is plugged into the wall. If it is, then check the breaker. If for some reason it has been switched, merely press the breaker in. If it is still not working, it may be time to replace to the garbage disposal.
Of course, you can always call us at NIR Plumbing with any of these issues as well. If your garbage disposal is acting up, we would love to help you diagnose the problem and find the solution. Please call us today.
